Voting Issues

A motion was made with a unanimous vote to approve the June 6, 2005 Board meeting minutes.

A motion was made with a unanimous vote to elect the following new Executive Board members:

Wendy Zarr, Vice President
James Beram, Treasurer
Angie Flachman, Secretary

A motion was made with a unanimous vote to accept the following club delegates for the 2005-2006 season:

Linda Curtis, Panthers
Carol Miller, Westside Venom
David Corral, Red Feathers
Brain Baxter, Highlands Ranch Metro District
Sally Morris, Summit
Steve Costello, Mustangs
Marc Luckett, Cheyenne Mountain
Stephanie Allen, South Suburban
Meghan Sims, Boulder Valley
Sara Cassidy, Eagles
Chris Neugebauer, Columbine

Sarah introduced the proposed by-law change which requires all clubs to make application to the CGLA. Previously, there was no system to welcome new organizations into the CGLA and clarify their long-term goals. A new program will be mentored by an established program. A motion was made and passed to amend Section 1 of the Membership section of the by-laws to reflect the application process and form.

Cici opened a discussion of the proposal from the June meeting stating no coach will be allowed to coach until they have passed a mandatory CGLA certification process. Sarah stressed the importance of ensuring all coaches are knowledgeable on the latest rule changes and have exposure to Positive Coaching Alliance philosophies. A question was raised about the fee for the US Lacrosse certification and it was agreed it is between $25 and$50. It was further agreed that assistant coaches would be encouraged to be certified but it would only be mandatory for head coaches. It was clarified that the process could be completed on-line or in person as coaches are sometimes secured just prior to the season. Hillary Patterson stressed that certification aids in coaches having a good understanding of the rules which helps ensure good report between coaches and officials. Rich Morgan proposed that, though there was general consensus that a certification process would be beneficial, the issue be tabled until specific criteria could be refined and presented at the next meeting for approval.

Festival Participation

Sarah relayed she had received a call from an acquaintance who started a new organization in Santa Fe. They discussed the opportunity to come to Denver and play in the CGLA Festival, with an appropriate entry fee, as they are seeking opportunities to play more teams. A discussion was opened regarding the idea of inviting non-CGLA teams to participate in the Festival. Proposed parameters to participate include adequate proof of insurance and submission of a roster to ensure participants in non-CGLA teams had not played on a CGLA team during the season. Marc Luckett suggested that some Colorado Springs teams would like to contact the Santa Fe teams to play as they are geographically closer. Margo Lister proposed that adding guest teams to the Festival could add additional administrative burden. Sally Morris mentioned that there was a mountain tournament that Santa Fe teams could enter. There was no vote.

Reminder of Important Systems

Officiating

Hillary Patterson ( pattersh@comcast.net ) is the Colorado Women's Lacrosse Officials Association (CWLOA) Youth Liaison. Questions, comments or concerns regarding officiating should be directed to Hillary via e-mail referencing lacrosse in the subject line. Please copy Sarah Grey, President, and Katie Pace, Executive Director, on any correspondence to Hillary. Hillary's e-mail will be posted on the CGLA website.

Laminated Cards

The laminated cards initiated last season will be available again for coaches and officials. The cards serve as quick reference of rules and playing levels during games.

Official Seminars

For $25, officials will visit clubs for an hour or two to review rules. Hillary suggested contacting the refs early as availability is limited once the high school season starts.

Field Permits

The CGLA suggests that each club pull a field permit for one extra Sunday in late April or early May to help reschedule cancelled games. Please be sure that communicate the date to Katie Pace, Executive Director.

Fundraising Report

Cici and Wendy will work together on clothing to sell during the season. A discussion was opened about securing online vending capabilities and several points were raised both in support and against the idea.

Treasurer Report

Brad reported the CGLA is in good financial position and ran at a balanced budget for last season. Dues for the 2006 will remain the same, $415.00 per team, but a raise in dues should be expected for the 2007 season. He also noted there was a reduction in the number of teams last season and urged CGLA administrators and delegates to continue to promote the sport and add teams.

Executive Director Report

New Rules

Katie Pace reviewed several rules have been added or modified including: hard boundaries, major fouls, equipment regulations and sportsmanship cards. Cici mentioned there was an article in the November/December 2005 issue of Lacrosse magazine with more information on all the rules changes. CWLOA is getting clarification on how they will call the new rule regarding body contact. More information on the rule changes will be posted to the CGLA website and there will be more information at the February coaches meeting.

Youth Training For Officials

Hillary stated the dates will be distributed once confirmed and that officials would love to see the CGLA have a preseason play day to help with officiating training.

Calendar of Events

Katie reviewed the CGLA calendar of events which will be located on the CGLA website. Marc Luckett will be attending and the National Convention and volunteered to report to the Board on any pertinent information. Sarah reminded clubs that the season will start later this year to avoid Spring Break conflicts. Cindy Woodman raised the issue that the abbreviated schedule could be a challenge if there are weather issues. The private school game scheduling date will be January 25, 2006 at 9:30 at Kent Denver. (Please do not schedule mid-week games during the HS playoffs as the officials are not available.)

Official Payment Vouchers

A discussion was opened regarding the effectiveness of the voucher system and it was agreed the system works effectively for all parties.

Official Training

Katie stressed the importance of developing officials and suggested clubs encourage high school players to participate in the training. Interested parties should e-mail Hillary Patterson or Robin Patterson or go to www.cwloa.com for more information. Officiating provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the game and earn extra income.

Team Colorado Tryouts

Fifth grade and younger players may try out to gain the experience but they will not be given a number or eligible to make the rosters.

New York Times Article

Cici pointed out an article in the New York Times about lacrosse and college opportunities. There will be an attempt to post it on the CGLA website.

Communication

Katie stressed the importance of ensuring important information was passed from administrators and delegates to coaches and parents. Angie ( angie@pub-house.com ) reminded the group that she will keep the contact list updated and requested changes be e-mailed to her.
