CGLA_ Board_ Meeting_June 6, 2005

General Board Meeting: Exec. Comm., Club Admins, and Club Delegates

South Suburban Offices, 6631 University Blvd.

The following delegates and/or administrators in attendance:

  • Cougars Les Snively
  • Panthers Linda Curtis
  • Patriots Cat Stevens
  • Smoky Hills Tricia Graf
  • South Suburban Allison Boyd

The following members of the CGLA executive board in attendance:

  • Vice-President CiCi Peterson
  • Secretary Jane Brown
  • Executive Director Kate Dresher

Vice President, CiCi Peterson, opened the meeting. The first discussion was regarding the May Festival at Cornerstone Park. It was concluded to be a great success and encouraged to be a continuing part of the upcoming CGLA season. Cornerstone is a great location for the festival, provided goals, lots of parking.it's a great site. Great clothing sales, great refs, etc. Nature of the festival is to make it fun.

The intent of this meeting was to wrap-up some loose ends before new Board members become assigned in the fall. The following issues were addressed.

1) CGLA's Mission Statement was distributed and read. A vote to approve the content was taken and passed.

2) The issue of by-laws changes was discussed. Usually when changes to the by-laws are made, issues have been addressed during the season that require modification.

3) The designation of "feeder teams" was discussed. It was decided that no team or club should refer to themselves as a feeder team and directly affiliate themselves with an existing high school program with the intent to be recognized as a club associated with a particular high school.

4) It was decided to amend the by-laws so that no 2 members of the same club may serve on the Executive Board during the same term.

5) There was a discussion regarding assisting new teams that are being added to CGLA. It was decided that CGLA would organize a new club packet for each team and assign a mentor coach or administrator from a league in good standing. During this period, the new team will be on a probationary status and subject to review. The Board must have a final vote after 1 year before they can be recognized as a new club and member of CGLA.

6) No coach will be allowed to coach until they have passed the mandatory CGLA coach's certification. The details of this test will be worked out with the Executive Board and the E.D. Rules, CGLA by-laws, PCA, etc will be a part of the certification. Each new coach must go through the on-line training and positive coaching alliance. (There was a motion to table this issue until the fall until we can clearly identify exactly what the coaches training would be.)

7) There was a discussion regarding poor behavior at games. CGLA intends to adopt the "purple card" as a way to maintain appropriate coaching and spectator behavior. (Motion to table the details of this process until next fall.)

Kate Dresher, who is resigning from the E.D. position, had some comments regarding her replacement. She stated that CGLA is contemplating expanding the responsibilities of the position, possibly requiring a full-time position. We are trying to include more educational opportunities (ie, goalie clinics, left-handed clinics, learn-to-play) to support and enhance the growth of this organization. Kate will be greatly missed by CGLA, and we wish her all the best in her new position in Ohio!

Les Snively proposed a pre-season festival to encourage some good coaching, as well as some educational opportunities for refs. Cat Stevens suggested a "play date" in February where rules and officiating can be learned. Allison Boyd is willing to offer fields for this event.

A summary regarding the ongoing U13 and U15 teams for Team CO was provided. The teams are practicing at Westlands, Cat Stevens is working with the goalies, and a total of 130 girls should be on the fields during the Team CO festival camp.

The 6 th grade all star program was discussed. Kenny Hosack has taken over most of the organization of this program. After the Vail High School game in Vail, the all stars will play several 20-minute exhibition games.

Website update: It's working! We need to get the word out.this IS the source of information for Colorado Girls Youth Lacrosse!

The schedule for next year was discussed. We had a rocky start because of spring breaks,.we agreed to continue to schedule 7 games and offer an opportunity for teams to add more if necessary. Allison Boyd suggested that the schedule be hand written, and Allison volunteered to do the schedule for pay.

Team CO try-outs: A motion was made for only girls who are currently playing 6 th and 7 th grade (birth dates complying) to be eligible for a spot on Team CO. Girls playing at a younger grade level are not eligible to make the team, although they may try-out without a number just to gain the experience.

CiCi Peterson acknowledged that the clothing sale at the festival was a huge success. The girls look forward to the opportunity to purchase exciting lacrosse clothing, which is so lacking in the retail stores here in Denver. CGLA grossed about $13,500.

501C3 is about to be finalized..

James Beram, from the Panthers has been recommended as the incoming Treasurer. We will be taking nominations for this position until and a final vote will be taken at the fall Board meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00.
